In May 2004 I purchased a late 2003 model Honda Varadero XL1000v (six months old with 7 miles covered) to follow a dream from my late teens of overland touring. Already visited France, Italy, Spain, & Ireland. Still planning for Eastern Europe. |

Since picking it up: I have been re-learning how to ride and cope with modern traffic conditions. The engine power gives a steady pull away in most conditions, and the bike stays stable on all road types - best of all returning close to 60mpg! I went along to the Bike Safe course run by the Metropolitan Police, and have started the IAM. Trainned as a CBT instructor. |
Extra Equipment: At the 1st service I had the dealer fit a ScottOiler, and Givi rails for the Givi keyless 41 litre panniers, supplemented by Cargo tank and tail bags. An AutoCom system has after initial fitting worries become essential equipment with which to enjoy the ride. Music from a MP3 player is fun but a bit distracting, likewise taking a mobile call. |

Touring: Not planning any major trips in 2004 has been overtaken by the invite to attend the Terra Madre in Turin. I have driven various cars this far around Europe and so decided to travel to and from the conference on my XL1000v. Then the size of the challenge loomed! Route planning - 200 mile legs between fuel and comfort breaks - what gear to wear - where to stay over en-route - what snacks to take along - what not to drink - finally how to get on and off the ferrys!! More news and pictures of the preparation for this trip will be posted here along with a post event report. |

Iron Butts: To qualify as an Iron Butt - riders must do 1,000 miles in a day - and this is my aim with the Varadero. Well in Oct 2004 I did 1000kms across France & late August 2005 950 miles again.
